War Stories is a raucous evening of off-the cuff storytelling by some of the wildest, loudest and most influential punk rock, new wave and rock’n’roll icons. The line up is specially curated and presented by Pleasant Gehman and Theresa Kereakes -- the duo behind the '70s LA punk rock zine Lobotomy.
"Many of us have known each other for decades: we’ve hung out, played music and gotten drunk together; a few of us were longtime roommates. We’ve played shows with each other and have been on the road together (back in the day as well as more recently) bringing our “OG” punk essence to other cities, states and countries. We’ve all set the bar for contemporary music, raised all kinds of hell, broken laws constantly and gleefully…. and we’ve lived to tell, in fact, many of us have also actually written books chronicling the wild times.
This show is about our insane stories…and YOU GET TO HEAR ALL ABOUT IT! "

The WAR STORIES We Could Tell
On October 7 (it's a Sunday and the next day is "Columbus Day," so the banks and Federal offices are closed... you might have a day off - so come and enjoy yourself)... a handful of OG Los Angeles punks will gather at the Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip for a story-telling round.
This is "old home week" for us collaborators. Pleasant Gehman (co-host/co-curator) and I both worked down the street at the Whisky a GoGo during our late teens and early twenties (though at different times), and have promoted shows independently at both the Whisky and the Roxy. Both clubs are owned by the same people. Two of the co-owners have passed away - Elmer Valentine and Mario Maglieri. Surviving partner, the legendary Lou Adler, his son and Mario's son now run these businesses as well as the Rainbow Bar & Grill, located next door to the Roxy. The Sunset Strip scene has always been one big family - from the club owners to the patrons and performers.
These clubs were playgrounds for everyone - the glitterati and gutterati alike. Pop culture central. The Rainbow parking lot, in between the Bar & Grill and the Roxy, had its own after-closing-time scene where patrons of all the Strip joints would gather to see and be seen.
Oh - I'm not giving you any details here! Pleasant and I will share these stories in vibrant and juicy detail on October 7.
Join us and Chip Kinman, Dave Catching, Jennifer Finch, Keith Morris, Mike Watt, and DJ Lina LeCaro for hot dishes and oral history lessons... come hear our War Stories: Tales of 70s & 80s Punk Mayhem Told by the Perpetrators Themselves! Buy tickets here
see you at at the Roxy!

War Stories & A Teenage Historical Record of Punk Rock
Ever since the late 1970s birth of punk rock in their Los Angeles home, Pleasant Gehman and Theresa Kereakes have been bearing witness and keeping records through their diaries, their notorious fanzine, Lobotomy: The Brainless Magazine, and their journalism and photography.
Four decades after the first sloppy punk rock power chord awakened the wild youth who became the original punk rockers, their influence continues and flourishes. Punk rock's first wave have become household names and their records and their books and memoirs come to life in live presentations such as WAR STORIES: Tales of 70s and 80s Punk Mayhem Told By the Perpetrators Themselves.
Pleasant and Theresa are bringing these WAR STORIES to a stage near you.

So This Happened
On February 9, 2018 at UCLA's Punk Conference, "Curating Resistance," Pleasant and Theresa recounted the teenage historical record of 1970s Los Angeles punk by explaining why and how they published Lobotomy: The Brainless Magazine.
LA Taco reported on it: While the conference was educational in nature, there was a sense of merging the academic and the personal. The event’s speakers included author Stacy Russo, whose recent book We were Going to Change the World: Interviews with Women from the 1970s and 1980s Southern California Punk Rock Scene, and Tanya Pearson from Women of Rock Oral History Project, both of whom have stressed the importance of women telling their own stories. On Friday, Pleasant Gehman and Theresa Kereakes recounted their days as young punks who documented the Hollywood scene as it unfolded in the zine Lobotomy. It’s punk as a means of making yourself heard and that also might be reflective of what is happening with the presence of this counterculture movement at major institutions.
UCLA's campus paper, The Daily Bruin previewed the conference.
The punk rock weekend ended with a sold-out spoken word show at Hollywood's El Cid, featuring storytelling from LA's original punk rockers, Exene Cervenka (X), Jane Wiedlin (The GoGo's), Iris Berry (The Ringling Sisters), Mike Martt (Tex & the Horseheads), and Bob Forrest (Thelonius Monster), with Pleasant and Theresa serving as emcees as well as storytellers.

UCLA Punk Conference - February 9 & 10
LA Punk Girls will be presenting:
LOBOTOMY MAGAZINE: A Teenage Historical Record of Punk Rock
In the mid-1970s, bored and unmoved by mainstream rock n roll, teens and young adults started to make rock n roll rebellious again. No one covered PUNK ROCK in the mainstream media, and if it was covered, it wasn’t understood.
For UCLA’s Punk Conference 2018, Pleasant Gehman and Theresa Kereakes will discuss the path they took that made their fanzine, Lobotomy, the written and visual foundation of the birth and growth of punk rock in Los Angeles as well as a presenter and commentator of the worldwide punk movement. A projected slide show of Lobotomy Magazine pages and photos from the 1970s will illustrate the talk.
Pleasant explains, “I always knew punk was going to be a cultural moment that was as important as Paris in the 1920’s, The Beats in North Beach in the 1950’s, or the Warhol scene in New York. Punk rock created a space for our own community, and I documented it all. Lobotomy Magazine gave a voice to women, disenfranchised youth, groundbreaking artists and writers and other cultural misfits.”
Theresa continues, “if you’ve ever texted anyone ‘pictures or it didn’t happen LOL,’ you will understand why I started taking pictures at concerts. For us, pop culture and especially our own subculture is an important component of history.”
